Ravens Ballroom is a New York-based power trio comprised of guitarist and vocalist Matthew Ravens, bassist and vocalist Simi Ravens, and drummer Jon Rosenbaum. The trio released their debut album, Rain Dance, in spring 2013.
Pulling from genres as diverse as psychedelic rock, post-punk, and Euro-jazz, and replicating the internal-production model trailblazed by Jimmy Page and Led Zeppelin, Ravens Ballroom has synthesized a broad range of sounds and aesthetics into its own unique style.
Matthew is the band's primary songwriter, lyricist, and producer, who integrates his background in fine arts and love of the poetic into his signature compositions that span the spectrum of human emotions. A self-taught guitarist, he deeply values a creative process that is fueled by experimentation. Matthew’s dedication to playfulness while maintaining the integrity of the unmistakable Ravens Ballroom sound sets the tone for constant evolution that continually excites fans.
Simi is co-songwriter and bass player for the band, and has been Matthew’s creative partner and wife for over a decade. A native of Rome, Italy, she brings a distinctive perspective to the band, and her contributions to the sound and style of Ravens Ballroom are integral to their success. Matthew’s and Simi's vocal harmonies, as well as their melodic and rhythmic interplay between bass and guitar, reflect an abiding relationship central to the band's foundation.
Rosenbaum is the stick-wielding thunder of the rhythm section, who draws upon influences ranging from Nick Mason to Keith Moon. Combining wisdom, sense of humor, and laidback personal style, Rosenbaum provides the finishing touches to the vision conceived by Matthew and Simi.
Ravens Ballroom performs regularly in the New York area, headlining small venues and opening for acts like the great David Johansen. The visionary trio and their passionate, evocative music have been well-received by industry insiders and audiences who are ever interested in hearing more.
